Pull & Bang

Shooting the bolting rabbit

Pull and Bang!

Yesterday was the day of the annual Dunderry Gun Club clay pigeon shoot. This is a big event in the area and is a big day out for the club members. We spent most of Saturday setting up in the lashing rain but luckily it held off for Sunday. It’s always a great day out with guns travelling form far and wide to compete for fairly decent prizes.

Clay shooting is awkward enough to photograph because obviously you can’t stand in front of someone while they’re shooting – well you can but you then automatically qualify for a Darwin Award! So you’re stuck taking pictures of people’s backs as they tuck down into their guns and shoot. This shot is taken on the “Bolting Rabbit” stand. The clay is fired from the trap on the left when the shooter calls “Pull”. It flies left to right at along the ground at a rate of knots and the shooter has to kill it before it reaches the sanctuary of the pallet on the right. Here the shooter made bits of the target just before it reached safety as you can see from the bits flying in all directions. What you don’t see here is that when the gun makes it’s “Bang” another target is thrown from the right and flies across the sky from right to left and the shooter has to change direction and try kill it before it hits the ground.

And for all those who wonder about my boards.ie user name – that’s where it comes from……..
